Animals treated with brain glue after a severe brain injury showed repair to their brain tissue and a quicker recovery time than animals who did not receive brain glue for similar injuries. The similar brain circuity between certain animals and humans has led to great promise.
How Does Brain Glue Work?
Brain glue was first created by University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences professor Lohitash Karumbaiah in 2017 to help shield brain cells and tissue after a TBI. Brain glue imitates the makeup and purpose of sugars that support brain cells. The hydrogel carries two protective proteins that can protect and help regrow brain cells in individuals who have suffered from a TBI. These proteins have been further engineered to help accelerate the regeneration and function of injured brain cells. Karumbaiah has filed for a patent on brain glue and has added a partner to study further and engineer this potential medical breakthrough.
